JDM MATES

JDMATES is a conceptual app I designed for JDM enthusiasts, people passionate about Japanese Domestic Market cars and everything related to the culture. The app focuses on bringing this community together, not only by sharing cars but also by matching users based on their favorite brands, models, and tuning styles.

RESEARCH AND UNDERSTANDING THE COMMUNITY

The project began with a briefing to create an app that helps people connect with others around a niche interest or community, encouraging users to get to know each other beyond superficial interactions. This meant designing a platform that goes deeper than just sharing content—fostering genuine connections based on shared passions.

To create a design that truly resonates with this niche, I began by researching the core values and habits of the JDM community. I explored how enthusiasts connect, share their passion, and discover new cars or events. This helped me understand the need for an experience that feels personal, dynamic, and authentic.

Visually, the design reflects the energetic, passionate spirit of the JDM scene. I used bold contrasts, sharp typography, and carefully chosen colors to evoke excitement while maintaining usability. Subtle animations and micro-interactions add responsiveness and life to actions like swiping, tapping tags, or exploring garages.

I structured the app’s interaction around a simple, swipe-based navigation that encourages quick, fluid exploration but went beyond this with additional features to add depth and richness. Users can customize their profiles by uploading photos of their cars along with detailed specs such as engine type, body kits, and wheels, giving them a platform to showcase their unique rides.

EXTRA FEATURES AND UX

The event discovery feature helps users find local meetups and larger tuning festivals, encouraging the community to engage offline as well. Throughout the design, I prioritized clear, intuitive navigation with quick-access buttons, and well-placed visual cues that guide users naturally without overwhelming them.

Summary :

This project, developed during my Communication and Multimedia Design studies at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, challenged me to balance conceptual innovation with functional, user-centered design. The result is an app that not only looks appealing but also strengthens community bonds by providing meaningful ways to connect around a shared passion.
